Data Protection

Data Protection, Ethics and AI Act within the BorderForce project

All matters linked to Data Protection, Ethics and AI Act implementation are of utmost importance for the BorderForce Consortium. We are aware of the issues that the project could raise during its research, design and fieldwork phases and want to address them through several measures.

Data Management:

  • A Data Manager has been appointed and acts as a main contact point to deal with this topic.
  • A Data Management Plan is designed by the Consortium in order to collect datasets, necessary for our research and development, in full compliance with the European laws and the fundamental rights. This document is public and will be soon downloadable from our website.
  • Informed consent forms are distributed to persons outside the Consortium who are involved in the project research.

A specific contract regulates the way data are shared and used within the Consortium.

Ethics:

  • an Ethics Assessment will be performed internally throughout the project by the Partner Eticas. This will enable to identify, analyse, and mitigate ethical challenges arising from our activities.
  • Eticas will use different monitoring mechanisms to ensure ethical compliance across all research, development and test phases of the project.
  • They will also ensure a specific training for the partners so that they can easier integrate ethical principles into their activities.
  • An Advisory Board has been named to guide the Consortium in its work, amongst other from an ethical perspective.

AI Act: The European Union has set a precedent by adopting the AI Act, a regulation aimed at developing trustworthy AI while ensuring respect for the fundamental rights of individuals. Entered into force on 1 August 2024, it will be taken into account throughout the whole development of BorderForce. A specific task is dedicated to an AI Act compliance assessment.
